1962 Gibson Les-Paul/SG Standard

Although now universally known as an SG, this remarkably clean 1962 Gibson was technically still part of the Les Paul line. The new double-cutaway design had replaced the Sunburst Les Paul in late 1960, and this example still has the “Les Paul” engraving on its truss-rod cover — something that disappeared from the model in 1963. The Les Paul/SG Standard was offered with several different vibrato systems. The notoriously impractical Sideways Vibrola was the most common, although some guitars were fitted with a short Bigsby or the considerably rarer Vibrola featuring a pearl-inlaid ebony block. This guitar is equipped with the latter, making it an especially distinctive and seldom-seen example. Its condition is exceptional, with barely any visible playwear. The finish on the front has faded slightly over time, while the back retains its strong, vibrant red colour. Weighing only 3.19 kg, the guitar is notably light and has a comfortable, rounded neck profile that feels fuller than the typically slim necks found on many early-1960s Gibsons. Both original PAF humbuckers remain in place, and their covers have never been removed.
 
 A rare and exceptionally well-preserved example with considerable collector appeal, supplied with its original hardshell case and a copy of the original invoice issued to the first owner in 1966.
